RODI'S ONLINE CHESS LINKS

The World's Most Active Chess Club

This page is updated constantly as I search out new places to play chess on the net.

  • INTERNET CHESS CLUB The #1 chess club on the net. Grandmasters and even the top players in the world regularly play here. This is a client server so you will have to download thier Blitzin client. But if you wish, you can also just play on telnet or thier Java client. This is not a free server unless you are a Grandmaster. There is a seven day free trial and then you will have to pay a fee for membership. Overall, this is the best place to play chess on the internet.

  • CHESS.NET Chessnet is another server where you have to download a client interface. This is a free server but there is a small fee if you wish to have some of the premium benefits. At times, you can find grandmasters and other high ranked players here. The interface in my opinion is not as good as the Blitzen client at the ICC but is one of the better places to play chess on the internet still.

    The Free Internet Chess Server

  • FREE INTERNET CHESS SERVER The FICS is exactly what it's name implies. FREE! In my opinion, the second best place to play chess on the net. They have a wide variety of graphical interfaces to choose from and Grandmaster lectures. You can use their Windows interface or play using their Java applet or Telnet. Overall, the FICS is worth checking out.

  • VOG CHESS Vog Chess is another of the better places to play chess on the internet. There are strong players there as well as an excellent graphical playing board and interface. They have a feature which notifies your when your opponent is "away" at another screen or minimizing the interface. This feature makes it difficult for people to use computer assistance while playing which is an excellent feature that most other servers are not equipped with. There is a 30 day free trial to evaluate the server then a small fee for continuation. Third best place to play chess in my opinion.

  • YAHOO CHESS Yahoo's chess server is a browser based Java program. Which means you don't have to download a client but instead are able to play straight from your web browser. It is the most popular place to play chess on the internet but hardly the best. If you have an older computer the Java can wreck hell on your browser, be unpredictable, and slow. There are always a large amount of people signed on and you will never have trouble getting a game.

  • US CHESS LIVE The official site of the United States Chess Federation. This site just opened and currently has some bugs but has potential to be a great site. If you are a member of the USCF you can play rated games for free. This is a client interface with a really nice board and graphics. Once they get the bugs out this will be one of the best places to play chess. Check it out.

  • INTERNET GAMING ZONE The Internet Gaming Zone is another popular place to play chess on the net. You will have to download thier Zone software but it is completely free. They have tournaments and ladder play. The graphics are good and the enviroment is friendly so check it out.

  • PLAYSITE Playsite is a Java based gaming site that is absolutely free. It has good graphics and usually has over 100 players in the chess area. This is one of the better Java-based servers.

  • M PLAYER M Player.com has a variety of free online games. If you own Chessmaster then this is where thier free online chess area is. You will have to download thier MP client unless you have Chessmaster.

  • KASPAROV CHESSKasparov chess is the official site of World Champion Garry Kasparov. This is a Java server with Grandmaster simuls and online chess lessons. This is a free server except for the chess teaching software. This server recently opened but is a good place to play chess.

  • CHESSEDCHESSED is a Java server played over the internet. It has a traditional rating system but lacks many of the better play features found on the premium sites. If you are looking for a nice quiet game there are usually people playing. This is also a free site that only requires registration. The graphics aren't too bad but it does not enforce drag and drop moves.
